Faith in Action

(A
National Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation)
The mission of Faith in Action of San Angelo is to create
a caring community of volunteers who offer support services to frail/elderly and
physically disabled adults enabling them to live independently and with dignity.
The Faith in Action program was founded on
the ideal of community volunteerism, of neighbors helping neighbors. With more American
living longer lives, many face the challenge of caring for a family member,
neighbor, or friend who suffers from arthritis, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer?s,
AIDS, or other long-term health conditions.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is
supporting faith-based community efforts to help meet this challenge with
volunteer caregivers. These efforts have helped to build over 1,100 interfaith volunteer
caregiving programs across the country.
Faith in Action coalitions bring together religious
congregations of many faiths, and other community organizations in a common
mission to provide volunteer care to their neighbors in need.
Five Building Blocks of a Faith in Action
Coalition:
-
Interfaith ? Coalition members must include religious
congregations that reflect the diversity of the community served by the
program.
-
Volunteer ? The individuals providing services must be
volunteers.
-
Caregiving ? The focus of the program is on informal
caregiving ? tasks such as transportation, shopping, and companionship.
-
Chronic illness or disability ? Volunteer services are
provided for people with long-term health problems.
-
Homebased ? The spirit of the program is
to serve the community at large.
The primary focus of service is where people
reside.
Faith in Actions coalitions recruit, train, and mobilize
volunteers.
